You'll want to continually work on statting your pets at the gym on minipet island. Stat health, speed, defense, and strength to be 2x+1 that of the level stat. Or in other words, only increase the level stat when you have to because that controls how much you pay for the gym.
Once you have your pet with at least 5 health stats, you should be able to defeat a card like "Pop". gennie's site has a lot of helpful battle information, and this page tells the opponent difficulty:

Weapon wise, the hunting spear appears to be inexpensive, but should still be good. And you can equip 2 to use both at once.

Again, keep statting at the gym so you can continue to defeat harder opponents.
