By Kalie (TheQuietRiot)
"You're making me work on Jesus's birthday? Whatever happened to the season of giving?" Kalie asked incredulously. "Don't think of it as working, Kal! Think of it as...doing a favor! A favor for...the children" Dominick snickered. "Dominick, I respect you. As my boss, I respect you. But, I seriously doubt that anyone is going to meander into this toy shop during Christmas. Everyone has finished their Christmas shopping and-" Dominick held his chubby fingers up, not wanting to hear more. Kalie sighed and ran her fingers through her dark hair, it was useless. "Anyway, I'm out. See you. Oh, and Merry Christmas. Perhaps you can celebrate with the Barbies" Dominick sarcastically suggested. The small, copper bell above the shop door clinked as Kalie's malicious boss took his leave. Kalie scanned the empty shop with sad eyes, not a light or ornament was in sight. The poor girl worked for complete Scrooges. The shop looked more like- Kalie's thought was quickly interrupted by another. Why should she spend her holiday in a BLEAK toy store? Kalie could transform it into...Santa's Workshop. Or perhaps a winter wonderland! Or a giant gingerbread house! Kalie smiled and headed toward the back of the store, passing dolls with smiles plastered against their faces and barney-themed notepads. She opened the door to the warehouse and began her search, anything associated with lights and cheer would suffice. Kalie narrowed her eyes as she searched, box after box. "C'mon, c'mon" she muttered under her breath. Kalie was about to turn away when a cardboard box that was tucked under a shelf caught her eye. She traced her hands over the flaps and flipped them open. Kalie tilted her head in surprise, a- a snake? She let out a prolonged scream. The large, scarlet snake opened it's wide eyes in surprise. Kalie scampered back, preparing herself for a vicious attack. The snake's eye twitched, "WHAT, may I ask, are you doing?" it asked in a silky voice. "Y-you talk? I'm conversing with a snake- a snake" Kalie crazily repeated. "There won't be much conversing if you continue to scream like a banshee. And no, you are talking with a Poera, of course. Open your eyes you silly human." Kalie raised an eyebrow, "a- a Poera. Of course" Kalie held back her emotions, trying to deal with this situation rationally. "It's Christmas, isn't it?" the Poera asked, "how did you know? Are you telekinetic?!" Kalie asked alarmed, clutching her head. "No, I can simply read your name tag, Kalie. In small font it says 'Merry Christmas' underneath it" the Poera said simply. "Of-of course" she stammered. "Well? Are we going to simply sit her looking like fools?" the Poera asked impatiently, "I wanted Christ-Christmas lights" Kalie managed to spit out. "Ah, create a Christmas in this dull space" the creature nodded in understanding, the Poera slithered out of its box and toward the open door. Kalie mutely followed, unable to utter another sound. "It seems we have a mission, my companions. We must create Christmas! It seems like an impossible task, but it can be done!" the Poera called out in an official manner nto the empty toy store. Kalie stared at the snake, throughly confused. Suddenly, the store came to life. Stuffed animals jumped off of their appropriate shelves, humbly bounding their way across the store. Action figures started marching in neat lines across the linoleum floor. Ballerinas gracefully leaped to and fro. "Wh-what's happening?" Kalie asked, her sight becoming blotted with dark spots. "We're making Christmas, Kalie. A task that you alone could never accomplish" the Poera said in a cheerful tone. "Ye-yes" Kalie uttered before fainting.
Kalie awoke with a start, it was a dream. It had all been a ridiculous dre- her train of thought crashed as she gazed around her. Bright, twinkling lights were strewn across the originally plain ceiling. Paper snowflakes hung lazily downward, suspended by glittery string. Cotton had been placed here and there, resembling snow. Breathtaking ornaments of all shapes and colors dangled from a miniature evergreen tree. Kalie couldn't help but smile as she saw three small, elaborately wrapped presents underneath it. Each present had been labeled for her. A transparent tear made a rivulet down Kalie's cheek. It was the most magnificent sight she had ever beheld. She looked down at her hand realizing she had been clutching something. A note. In loopy cursive two words and a signature had been been quickly scrawled out.
Merry Christmas
