I pulled back the race car and watched it zoom forward. I always sort of wondered how those worked. For a moment I'd forgotten I was inside of the hospital. The waiting room. Nobody likes the feeling of a waiting room. Seriously, have you ever examined the people in a waiting room? They are tense, look uneasy, and every time someone that even looks like they work at the hospital walks by, everyone looks up with a stressed look on their face.
I looked up and saw the nurse walking towards my father who was sitting next to me. She looked at me and smiled one of those soft smiles intended for children when you don't really know what to say. Like they have not yet come up with a good enough way to word exactly what it is they have to tell you. She gave up and started to say something to my father. I don't remember what exactly but I remember her voice being gentle. Before she could finish, her pager went off anyway and she rushed back to the room. My father followed, leaving me with a different nurse.
Six hours later, I felt my dad shaking me awake. I opened my eyes to see my father's smiling face with a few tears on his cheek. He picked me up and carried me to the room where my mom was. The look on her face I will remember as tired, but happy. In her arms was something wrapped in a pink blanket. I looked down and saw a sleeping baby.
She looked back at me and I could have sworn that at first sight, there was a look of adoration towards me lurking in her eyes. I reached down and took her hand in mine and my parents smiled. They kept telling me to be very, very gentle. She was only a baby. They told me how now I had a responsibility to protect my new baby sister. I was a big brother now. I looked up at my parents and listened to their conversation. ???What should we name her???? my mother asked. My father kissed her cheek gently and said,
???Alexandria. We should name her Alexandria.??? It was perfect. The name was perfect. My mother agreed with a nod and fell asleep holding her new born child. My father laid next to her and held me in his lap. This was the day that Alexandria Lee Roth was born.

I opened my eyes to the impact of a dry erase marker making contact with my head. I lifted my head from my desk in time to hear laughter of the students around me. Mr. Grush was quick with the lecturing as I assumed he would be. ???Mr. Roth would it absolutely kill you to stay awake in class for one day? If you're going to be here anyway wouldn't you rather not waste your life away sleeping through it????
???To be quite honest with you sir I don't much see the point in literature class.???
???You don't see a point? Maybe if you paid a bit more attention you might comprehend the significance of the classes that you attend. I suppose I'll let you off with a warning this time but don't be stupid.??? More laughter.
Mr. Grush was probably the most uptight man on the staff at the high school. He was a short, bald man with glasses and this insane need to wear a different colored tie. Same design. Different color. He pointed this distinction out to me many times. I didn't know if there was a Mrs. Grush and to be honest I didn't really care to. All I knew was that literature was his life and he took it very, very seriously. ???Besides,??? he added, ???I don't have time to keep you after class today. I have to attend a chess club meeting considering I'm the leader of the function.??? Yea, there was no Mrs. Grush.
I nodded and the bell rang. I grabbed my books and he stopped me at the door. ???Sir, I'm going to be late to math.??? I said quickly.
???I will write you a pass. This will only take a moment. Please take a seat.??? I sat. ???Look Travis,??? I knew where this was going. ???I know things have been hard for you after what happened, but you can't give up. You've made it too far to waste your Senior year away. It may be the most important year of your life. I understand that you want to want to go into architecture? You can't do anything in that field unless you make it into a good college. So don't waste this. You're almost there.??? I nodded. He wrote the pass. I went to math.

???C'mon just play something for me! You're so good!??? Alexandria exclaimed. I grinned at her.
???And what do I get out of this????
???Um....??? She closed her eyes and scrunched her nose like she always did whenever she was thinking. She smiled sweetly and brushed her blond hair out of her blue eyes. She had grandma's eyes like me. ???How about I decide not to tell mom about how you sneaked your license yesterday to go meet Miles.??? I hesitated. How did she always know these things?
???Deal.??? I smiled wide and started playing my piano for her. I'd been practicing since I was in the fourth grade so I'd gotten pretty good. I would play for her when she was little and she would fall asleep to it. We agreed that there is no more beautiful sound than a piano. We started to sing random words to the tune that I played and busted up laughing. My dad walked in the door from work.
???Travis!??? He called.
???Yea dad????
???What is that noise????
???Me and Lex were just messing around, no big deal.???
???Don't you think you should be more focused on your homework? You gotta be good in math if you want to be an architect like your old man.???
???Yes I guess so but...???
???Good.??? He remarked before I could finish. ???Get to it then.??? He walked away and stepped into his office, closing the door. I love music. I don't wanna be an architect.
