22nd Apr 2008 14:12 This here is for those who want to improve their roleplaying. It's for those who are Basic and want to rise to Intermediate, and so on.
So, to begin. I am your guide, Fennixen. Hi! I'll lead you through a few things. Thanks for reading!
1. Proper grammar and capitalization.
I know nobody's perfect, especially me, but these things are what you need to get a good handle on. See this sentence?
mary rode her bike to the store oh no she said i have a flat tire!
This is better:
Mary rode her bike to the store. "Oh no!" she said, "I have a flat tire!"
See? It brings the story alive!
Also, I know that describing stuff is important to give your reader a mental picture of what things look like, but too many can slow the reader down.
For instance:
Mary drove her 5-speed, bright blue, mountain bike to the large, white, new superstore. "Oh no!" she cried, wiping her long slender fingers on her blue, torn, expensive jeans. "My bike has a flat tire!" She raised her wide, piercing green eyes to the cloudy afternoon sky and wept silver teardrops that trickled delicately down her pale cheeks and made small pools on the dark gray road.
It gets a little tedious sometimes. I must say that it really gives the reader a mental picture, but the important thing to remember is balance.
More coming later.
