16th Sep 2008 10:01 For those of you who don't know, I live in Houston, Texas. If you aren't aware of any current events, my city was recently hit by hurricane Ike, which left the US's 4th largest city in shambles. There is so much devestation, and so many people have lost everything because of this storm. No, it wasn't the "second Katrina", and it wasn't nearly as powerful, but this city has some major rebuilding to do.
My own house was severely damaged. Yes, I still have a house. No, I can not live in it anymore. During the storm a lot of the shingles from my roof blew away, leaving my attic exposed to the elements. A ton of rain got trapped in my attic, and started coming through my celing and walls. Eventually, the weight of the water became too much and my celing began to cave in. The celing caved in 3 different rooms, including my own bedroom. Our roof was recently patched up, but it the insulation from our attic fell through and made a mess of the affected rooms. This insulation is made of fiberglass, so it's not safe to touch or breathe in large quantities. This would not be a major problem, except that my home currently has no electricity, making the cleanup almost impossible. To effectively cleanup the mess, we'll need a power supply to be able to run a shopvac.
So, unfortunately, my family doesn't have a place to stay right now. Without any power at my home, I wont have any means of getting online, even if we are eventually able to stay there. Currently, we're staying at various friend's houses, most of which have electricity luckily.
I will likely not be able to make any graphics for a month or two :[
