Homeless people in our communities are a fact of life, especially in big cities. Many of us don't know how to interpret this situation or what we can do to help. We may vacillate between feeling guilty, as if we are personally responsible, and feeling angry, as if being homeless is entirely on their shoulders. The situation is, of course, far more complex than either scenario. Still, not knowing how to respond, we may fall into the habit of not responding at all. We may look over their heads and not make eye contact, or look down at the ground as we pass, falling into a habit of ignoring them. Each time we do this, we disconnect ourselves from a large portion of the human family, and it doesn't feel right.

Most of us know in our hearts that the homeless and the poor are not so very different from ourselves. They may be the victims of poor planning or an unavoidable crisis. Some of them are mentally ill, some are addicted to drugs or alcohol, and some are choosing to be homeless for reasons we may never fully understand. We can imagine that, given their lives, we would likely have ended up in the same place. This does not mean that we are meant to rescue them as they are on their own learning path, but it does remind us that we can treat them as equals, because that is what they are. Even if we aren't able to offer food, shelter or money, we can offer a blessing as we pass. We can look them in the eye and acknowledge our shared humanness, even if we don't know how to help them. This simple act of kindness and silent or spoken blessings can be helpful to those living on the street.

If you want to help with information, you can learn about the services in your area and share the locations of food banks, shelters, and other resources. As parents, perhaps you would like to plan ahead, talking with your children about how as a family you would like to handle these situations. Whatever you decide to do, you will feel much better when you make a conscious choice not to simply look away.

  • DixieBorn 0 DixieBornwow, I am impressed. Well said, and It is a shame to see homeless people. But for the grace of God, there go I! I thank God everyday, I have a home.
  • SingleStillSearching 0 SingleStillSearchingI believe that god has a plan for everyone and for some people their plan isn't very well. I thank god about having a family, a home, food, and everything he has given me. It's sad if you really think about how some people feel and look and live. It's very sad...
  • Hariyn 0 HariynThis is a very touching and thought-invoking Blog post. I do feel for homeless people, but I've never realised I do actually look away from homeless people... I mean, I've never really noticed that I do so. Maybe it's because I don't want them to see that I know they're there and won't say anything, or that I don't really want the guilt of knowing that I have a home to go to, and moan that I don't have this, that or the other. I live on the Isle of Wight, so homelessness isn't a huge issue, but there is the occasional homeless person in the street. '~' I don't believe in a god or gods, so I think that that might enhance whatever pity or guilt I feel for the homeless people. The fact that no human deserves that, and that I believe no deity has put them in that place, almost makes me feel like its my fault. Well.
  • monkeygurl03 0 monkeygurl03It's hard to look at a homeless person and u realize that they chose that lifestyle... but we can help them out in a way that they can be happy.

  • caricka 0 carickaYou know it`s refreshing to see other peoples opinions. I have alway`s talked to given to and helped out the homeless. I`m 40 now, and as a 16 year old would sit downtown and talk with them, bring them a hot chocolate, and just see what they were all about. Needless to say, my friends thought me nuts, but I`m not easily swayed, and it turns out true friends really "will be there" for you, and now just take it in stride. I`ve ate in soup kitchens(good free hot food)dressed as I alway`s do, and helped clean up afterwards.I never went there as counsel, I went there as friend, I didn`t asked what they needed I asked what they had planned for thier day! They`re just like us, just a little down on thier luck. Then again anyone who knows me say`s I don`t see in colours, everyone created equal right? So Maybe one of you reading this right now, next time your out and about, take notice, thier there! Say hey, don`t turn your head! I could go on and on, but you get the gist! Carla

  • MindReader12 0 MindReader12Its usually their own fault they have no home. Im not saying always though.
  • dreamer4darkness 43 dreamer4darknessI always nod and smile, or share a bit of change if they ask, and I'm not the most fortune person either, but I feel awful if I don't help. However, the reason many people may look away and ignore the homeless is because they are in fact not homeless, and begging for change is their "part time" job. You would be surprised at how many people actually do that. Look it up. Those dishonest people take away from those that are in fact in need of a friend, or financial assistance. It's awful to see.

  • myfriends13 0 myfriends13I like seeing all these peoples ideas on trying to help homeless people.I never have money, and when I see someone homeless,I wanna help, but I cant. When I was younger....lol,when I grew up I wanted to open up a home for homeless people, just like an orphanige, except for homeless people. And they could live there,I'll give them food, give them clothes, etc untill they got a job and had enough money to get there own place. But I dont know now cause now I'm older, and the economy is getting worse, how am I sopose to take care of all those people?Well, who knows what the future may bring! We should make topics trying to figure out how to help them.Mm me if you want to do that.
